Overview

According to The Samaritans, deaths from suicide rose by 10.9% in 2018. This qualification aims to raise awareness around suicide. Through this qualification you will gain an understanding of the context of suicide, the impact of stressful situations on an individual, how individuals cope differently with stressful situations, the possible effects of stressful situations on an individual’s wellbeing, how an individual’s outlook might impact their susceptibility to suicidal thoughts, the importance of talking about suicide, suicidal thoughts and seeking support.

A requirement for the course is that you have a minimum of Level 1 in English and Mathematics or be prepared to sit an English and Mathematics assessment to establish your current levels. Please discuss any queries regarding your English and Mathematics with us because all applications will be considered on an individual basis.

The Award is made up of one unit and you will cover the following:

  • Understand the context of suicide in the UK and the importance of suicide awareness
  • Understand different stressful situations an individual may face in their lives that may increase their suicidal thoughts
  • Understand stress vulnerability and how an individual’s ability to cope influences their response to stressful situations and the likelihood of them having suicidal thoughts
  • Understand the impact stressful situations may have on an individual’s mental health, the use of helpful coping strategies and how the stressors (and unhelpful coping strategies) may lead to suicidal thoughts
  • Understand how an individual’s current perspective and view of the future may be a strong indicator of their level of suicide risk
  • Understand the importance of a conversation taking place with an individual at risk of suicide and to identify solutions-focused responses
  • How to signpost the individual to appropriate support and professional services.

All learning will take place using an interactive distance learning platform and you will learn through independent research. An HSDC assessor will be on hand for any queries and they will mark your assessments and provide you with feedback.

You will be assessed through online assessment.

On completion of this course, you will be workplace ready or have enhanced your existing work skills.

There are lots of people at the college, each studying a diverse range of courses, people from all different areas come to study here, it creates a sense of community, there is a huge social aspect to college life across all courses.

Lee Backhouse, BTEC student

My experience at the College was great, it’s very different to school, and I think it’s a good step to going to university. The support was amazing, I loved all of my teachers, they helped me through everything. The College is friendly and you will succeed.

Heidi Adamson Brattland, A Level student

I’m very, very happy, I didn’t expect to do so well. The College has been helpful and supportive. I loved my courses, and the teachers were really good – every single one of them. The facilities are great, but it’s the staff that really make this place.
