Overview

If English is not your first language then ESOL classes could help you to become better at communicating in English in everyday life.ESOL classes are available to anyone over the age of 16 who does not have English as a first language. You will be encouraged to undertake a range of tasks in a small classroom environment with support from the teacher in preparation for moving you through the level and preparing you for the exam at the end of the course.Topics you may cover include: Health Travel and transport Shopping and food Education systems in the UK Topics that relate to Citizenship

Following the initial assessment to identify your level, you will then work on your English skills at the appropriate level.Use different styles of writing and punctuate correctlyWrite in complete sentences and spell correctly using a variety of techniquesUse format and structure for different purposesPresent information appropriatelyUse correct grammar and punctuationScan different texts to locate informationObtain specific information from a text and decode wordsRead and recognise sentence structures and recognise different purposes of textsFollow a narrative, skim read and identify main points within a textRecognise and understand organisational featuresSupport arguments with evidence and make relevant contributions in discussions.Listen and respond appropriately to informationRead and recognise vocabulary relating to everyday topics

There are 3 exams at the end of each level. Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening.Exams can be taken at various times throughout the course and your teacher will discuss with you the best time for you to sit the exam.

Following completion of ESOL Level 2 you can move onto a GCSE English Programme, Apprenticeship or other College programme.
