Second year Geography student, Alex Teeuw was recently presented with the 2019 Steve Millar Award for Excellence in Geography. The award is given to the student who achieves the highest grade in their Geography exam at the end of their first year and who is also progressing on to study A2 Geography. Alex was presented with the Award by Steve Millar at a private ceremony held at Alton College. He said: “I am delighted to be receiving this award and honoured to have been chosen. As I was so surprised to hear this, I am yet to decide what to spend the money on, but expect it will be to do with books for university.”
Alex has recently completed his application to study Geography at either the University of Cambridge, Manchester, Bristol, Exeter or Edinburgh.
Steve Millar spent over 30 years working at Alton College in the Geography Department and when he left, in conjunction with the Alton College Foundation wanted to leave an annual award for a student excelling in Geography. The award has specific requirements for the student to have gained the highest marks and be progressing to A2. Receipt of such an award at the end of the first year going into the second year seemed like the most helpful point in the student’s education and will hopefully be helpful in taking their interest in Geography forward to a higher level.
Trevor Heley Managing Director of the Alton College Foundation was at the presentation and said he was “delighted to see Alex receive his Award. He is a conscientious student who is a great ambassador for Alton College, geography and the Foundation.”
